In what is expected to be his last bout in Germany before invading the U.S. boxing scene in search of Kelly Pavlik, IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (26-0, 21 KOs) scored a twelfth round knockout over Elvin Ayala (18-3-1, 8 KOs) on Saturday night at the Sparkassen Arena in Kiel, Germany. Abraham pressed the action from the opening bell. Ayala was game and in the fight early, but in rounds three and four the heavy hands of the champion began to take their toll. Abraham floored Ayala with a right hand in round five. Arthur continued to punish Ayala in the sixth. Ayala was having a good seventh round until Abraham rocked him at the end of the frame. Abraham continued to land damaging blows as the bout progressed but the super tough Ayala was determined to battle until the end, which came, brutally, in the twelfth when Abraham dropped him face first with a vicious left uppercut. Referee Roberto Ramirez stopped it at the 2:32 mark.

WBA#1/WBC#3 flyweight and ex-WBA 108-pound champ, unbeaten Koki Kameda (17-0, 11 KOs), 112, returned to ring action and pounded out a shutout decision (100-91 twice and 100-90) over WBO#2 light-fly Rexon Flores (19-4-4, 9 KOs), 111.5, over ten fast rounds on Saturday in Chiba, Japan. The Japanese sensation Kameda, 21, connected with a southpaw double left and dropped the Filipino, 25, early in the opening session, but didn’t follow up hard to go for a first round knockout. Kameda was too fast and aggressive for the slower Flores, whom the ex-champ battered from all angles in every round. The flamboyant prefight favorite occasionally displayed showboating with his hands low and had him at bay in the ninth, but the Filipino showed his determination and durability to refuse to go down again. Kameda, after an eight-month hiatus, wasn’t as sharp and powerful as previously, but showed his superior class against the game Filipino who had been unsuccessful to win the WBO flyweight belt from Omar Narvaez via unanimous decision in Argentina in 2006. Asked by the Japanese press which is stronger between Kameda and Narvaez, Flores replied, “Narvaez is faster and Kameda is more powerful. I cannot expect which is better as they haven’t fought yet. I only admit Kameda is a good boxer with speed and power.”

Andreas Kotelnik (29-2-1, 13 KOs) secured the WBA 140 pound title in Cardiff this evening stopping the previously unbeaten champion Gavin Rees (27-1, 13 KOs) in the twelfth and final round. In an absorbing fight, the former Olympic silver medalist from the Ukraine Kotelnik showed superior boxing skills and power in the second half of the fight. The 30-year-old Kotelnik hurt Rees with a strong right hook in the final minute and he wobbled and held on but fell to the floor as the referee tried to break them. It was obvious as he rose he was in trouble and after a final flurry, referee Luis Pabon halted the fight with just 26 seconds remaining and a stoppage time of 2:34 of the twelfth and final round. In the early stages, Rees took the fight to Kotelnik but the former amateur who won 135 of 150 amateur fights always landed the more effective and telling punches. Rees landed some good body shots in the middle rounds but the Ukranian from the Universum stable always seemed to have the superior boxing ability and power.

In a colossal upset, The Contender's Brian Vera (16-1, 10 KOs) scored a totally unexpected seventh round TKO over previously unbeaten middleweight prospect Andy Lee (15-1, 12 KOs) on Friday night before a shocked audience at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Lee, who had been hyped as the future of the middleweight division, looked like he would have a short night when he dropped Vera in round one. The game Vera, however, came back to hurt Lee in round two and and showed an incredible ability to take a punch as he literally wore down Lee with his tenacity. Vera finally got the stoppage with a barrage of clean shots in round seven. Time was 2:17. Although there was no question that Vera was having a huge round, the stoppage by referee Tony Chiarantano seemed premature as the fatigued and bloodied Lee was still punching back. Still the win was a tremendous accomplishment by courageous Vera against all odds.

Former two-division world champion Joel Casamayor (36-3-1, 22 KOs) showed he's still at the top of the lightweight division with a brilliant tenth round TKO over previously unbeaten and highly regarded Michael Katsidis (23-1, 20 KOs) in a bout for Katsidis' WBO interim lightweight title on Saturday night at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, CA. Casamayor dropped Katsidis twice in round one and couldn't miss with his straight left. Katsidis, however, managed to brawl his way into the fight in rounds three and four, as he hurt Casamayor with some brutal shots. Katsidis' relentless pressure continued and he knocked Casamayor completely out of the ring at the end of round six. Over the ensuing rounds, the cagey Casamayor used all his boxing skill and experience and was able to take some of the steam out of Katsidis' furious attack. Casamayor was deducted a point for a low blow in round nine, but spectacularly dropped Katsidis hard in round ten and referee Jon Schorle stopped the bout moments later. Time was :30. Entering the tenth round, Katsidis was ahead 84-83 on two cards, while Casamayor was ahead 85-82 on the third card

In an IBF super middleweight title eliminator, Librado Andrade (27-1, 21 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over Robert Stieglitz (31-2, 19 KOs). Andrade got off to a good start, but Stielitz got into the fight in round four. Andrade was back in command in round five and walked through all Stieglitz' offense before finaling finishing Stieglitz with a barrage of punches in round eight. Time was 2:53.

In one of the most eagerly awaited cruiserweight unification fights ever, WBA and WBC champion David Haye (21-1, 20 KOs) destroyed WBO champion Enzo Maccarinelli (28-2, 21 KOs) in two rounds on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London. After an even first round, Haye began to land in round two, then he floored Maccarinelli with a brutal barrage of punches. A wobbly Macca beat the count but reeled around the ring and referee John Keane waved it off at 2:04. Haye now plans to move up to the heavyweight division.

In the co-feature, unbeaten super featherweight Kevin Mitchell (26-0, 19 KOs) survived a rocky sixth round to score a ninth round TKO over Carl Johanneson (27-4, 19 KOs). Also "The Contender's" Paul Smith (23-0, 13 KOs) punished Cello Renda (14-6-1) before the middleweight clash was stopped in round six.

In the first heavyweight title fight ever to be held in Mexico, "The Nigerian Nightmare" Samuel Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) stopped Oleg Maskaev (34-6, 26 KOs) in round six to claim the WBC heavyweight title in Saturday night at the Plaza De Toros in Cancun. Both fighters rocked each other in an exciting round three, and Peter had established a two point lead after four rounds. Peter ended the show with a sustained barrage of punches that prompted referee Guadelupe Garcia to stop the fight. Time was 2:56.

Lightweight Nate "Galaxxy Warrior" Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs) dethroned previously unbeaten IBF/WBA/WBO world champion Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz (33-1, 17 KOs) by twelve round split decision. Both fighters excitingly traded punches over the first half of the fight. Campbell cut Diaz over the left eye with a punch in round six, however Campbell was deducted a point in that round by referee Jesus Salcedo Lopez for an alleged headbutt. From that point things went south for the champion as Campbell became more and more in control. Diaz' eye was swollen shut at the end. Scores were 114-113 Diaz, 115-112, 116-111 Campbell.

The promised "new" John Ruiz (43-7-1, 29 KOs) seems exactly like the old one. "The Quiet Man" tediously grappled his way to a unanimous decision win over equally disappointing Jameel McCline (39-9-3, 23 KOs). Scores were 117-111, 118-110, and 119-109 in a bout that left the fans in Cancun to entertain themselves by mocking the fighters with chants, catcalls, and whistles normally reserved for the ring card girls.

Free-swinging but less accurate Daisuke Naito (32-2-3, 20 KOs), 112, Japan, very barely kept his WBC flyweight belt as he battled to a split draw with ex-champ Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (67-3-1, 35 KOs), 112, a southpaw Thailander, over twelve hairline rounds on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. The official tallies were as follows: Alejandro Rochin (Mexico) 115-113 for Naito, Jaebong Kim (Korea) 114-115 for Pongsaklek, and Hubert Minn (US) 114-114. The referee was Hector Afu (Panama). It was not a so-called “hometown draw” which usually means that a foreigner deserves a victory. For Pongsaklek, a 30-year-old ex-champ, it looked like a draw at best or his defeat by a slight margin. The previously formidable Thailander was just a disappointment as he visibly ran out of gas and seldom tossed punches positively from the fifth round onward. Naito, 33, threw three times as many punches as Pongsaklek, and some 80% of his blows only hit the air, but the Japanese was an aggressor all the way. (More)

In the first heavyweight unification clash in nine years, IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (50-3, 44 KOs) claimed the WBO title of previously unbeaten Sultan Ibragimov (22-1-1, 17 KOs) via unanimous decision on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Sultan did more in round one, but Wladimir got his jab working in round two and used that punch almost exclusively to win the next few rounds. Sultan's aggression gave him the edge in the sixth, but Klitschko again took over for the balance of the fight as the fearless Ibragimov found it difficult to get inside. Scores were 119-110, 117-111, 118-110.

Unbeaten middleweight John Duddy (24-0, 17 KOs) won a controversial ten round majority decision over Walid Smichet (17-4-3, 13 KOs). Smichet started strong and was able to bust up Duddy's face, but came up short on the scorecards 95-95, 98-92, 98-92. Duddy is now in the mix to face WBC/WBO world champion Kelly Pavlik this summer.

In a WBA heavyweight eliminator, seven-foot former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev (48-1, 34 KOs) scored a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over former WBO heavyweight champ Sergey Liakhovich (23-3, 14 KOs) on Saturday night at the Nuremburg Arena in Nuremburg, Germany. As promised by trainer Alexander Zimin, Valuev looked much more polished as he dismantled Liakhovich. After a close first round, Valuev punished Liakhovich in round two, landing a series of hard shots at the bell. Valuev, the largest and heaviest boxing champion of all time, continued to do most of the damage as the bout progressed. The "Russian Giant's" long jab caused all kinds of problems for the smaller Liakhovich, who just couldn't get anything going. In the end, the only question was whether or not Valuev would get a stoppage. The game Liakhovich refused to go down, however, as Valuev swept the scorecards 120-108, 120-108 and 120-107. With the win, Valuev earned a rematch and a chance to regain his old belt against WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev.

Former WBO heavyweight title challenger Kali Meehan (34-3, 28 KOs) punished journeyman Jeremy Bates (22-16-1, 18 KOs) until referee Ingo Barrabas stopped the fight at 1:16 of round three.

In a battle of crafty southpaw super flyweights, WBC champion Cristian Mijares (34-3-2, 13 KOs) won a twelve round split decision over Jose Navarro (26-4, 12 KOs). Ring technician Mijares systematically outpointed Navarro, cutting him badly over the right eye and closing his left eye, en route to a 115-113, 117-111 win on two cards. Judge Doug Tucker turned in a bizarre card 120-108 for Navarro. Navarro is now 0-4 in world title fights.

Unbeaten junior middleweight Ronald Hearns (18-0, 14 KOs) scored an eighth round KO over Juan Astorga (11-2-1, 6 KOs). Hearns floored Astorga with a right hand late in round five and finished him at 1:10 of round eight.

WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (33-0, 29 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Jermain Taylor (27-2-1, 17 KOs) in a very exciting non-title encounter on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas. Fighting at a catch weight of 166, Pavlik was busier while Taylor landed the sharper punches. Most of the rounds were close, but it was Pavlik who closed stronger to win by scores of 117-111, 115-113, 116-112

In a much anticipated WBO super flyweight championship clash, world champion Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel (36-2-1, 27 KOs) scored an explosive fourth round knockout over former WBA champion Martin "Gallito" Castillo (33-3, 17 KOs). Montiel floored Castillo with a double left hook in round one and then pummeled Castillo until he knocked him out with a left hook to the body at 1:56 of round four. It was Montiel's most impressive performance to date.

An anticipated ESPN2 Friday Night Fights Cruiserweight main event devolved into a sometimes tedious, always sloppy affair as 29-year old 2004 U.S. Olympian BJ Flores (22-0-1, 13 KO) picked up the biggest win of his career over 33-year old veteran banger Darnell Wilson (22-6-3, 19 KO). Turned out to be a good idea as Flores was rewarded with a unanimous decision by scores of 115-113, 116-112 and a harder to understand 118-110.

Carlos "El Indio" Quintana (25-1, 20 KOs) shocked previously unbeaten WBO welterweight champion Paul "The Punisher" Williams (33-1, 24 KOs) on Saturday night at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California. As always, the elongated 6'2" Williams kept his hands moving, but the much shorter Quintana (listed at 5'9) attacked relentlessly, connecting with the harder shots. Williams was cut over both eyes as Quintana seized the title by scores of 115-113, 116-112, 116-112.

Unbeaten WBC #1 welterweight Andre Berto (21-0, 18 KOs) outclassed former European titleholder Michael Trabant (43-3-1, 19 KOs), winning a one-sided sixth round TKO. Berto dominated Trabant from round one, landing at a very high rate. The outgunned Trabant tried to establish his jab but mostly offered little resistance. The fight was stopped after round six.

Son of the Legend Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (35-0-1, 28 KOs) scored an eighth round TKO over Jose Celaya (31-4, 16 KOs) in a bout for the WBC Continental America super welterweight title on Saturday night at the Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato, Mexico.Chavez dropped Celaya with a big left hook in round two, but Celaya with a bad mouse under his left eye fought back gamely. Celaya's tactic of switching between orthodox and southpaw stances, however, began to give Chavez problems. In the ensuing rounds it was Celaya outfoxing and outlanding Chavez, although it was Junior landing the harder shots. In the end, though, it was Chavez' power that made the difference as he finally dropped Celaya again with a right hand in round eight and Celaya, with his face badly busted up, told referee Rocky Burke that he had had enough moments later after absorbing another wicked right. Time was 2:14. "I wasn't myself," said Junior afterward. I know I have it in me. Ths was just a bad night. I know I can do a lot better."

The incredibly busy WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa (31-5, 16 KOs) pounded out a near shutout twelve round unanimous decision over Jesus Iribe (10-5-1, 4 KOs). Scores were 119-109, 120-108, 120-108 in Sosa's fifth title defense in eight months.

In a good action fight, WBC/WBO #6 rated middleweight Marco Antonio Rubio (39-4-1, 35 KOs) stopped former Olympian Jose Luis Zertuche (19-5-2, 14 KOs) in round seven. Rubio outworked the valiant Zurtuche for most the fight and finally got the stoppage after a sustained barrage of punches with nothing coming back. Time was 2:22.

Unbeaten super lightweight Omar Chavez (6-0, 5 KOs) demolished Miguel Camacho (2-1-1, 2 KOs) in round one with a crushing hard hook to the body. Time was 1:27.
